O objetivo desta imagem é demonstrar o mecanismo de funcionamento da ectotermia, condição termorreguladora que alguns animais apresentam, por exemplo, os répteis – como a serpente ilustrada – na qual o ambiente influencia diretamente na temperatura corporal do indivíduo. Desta forma, em ambientes frios, o animal necessita buscar fontes externas de aquecimento, como raios de sol, pedras aquecidas, dentre outros. Da mesma maneira, em ambientes quentes, procura por fontes externas de resfriamento, como sombras, água fresca, etc.
