Este ato reflexo é explicado através de uma via neural representada ao lado, que mostra a trajetória do estímulo: o neurônio sensitivo detecta a dor e envia o sinal até a medula espinhal, onde uma resposta rápida é transmitida pelo neurônio motor para o músculo, resultando na retirada da mão. Na parte inferior, a segunda sequência reforça a noção de que esse reflexo é um processo automático e rápido, não necessitando de processamento consciente pelo cérebro, semelhante ao funcionamento rápido de um computador ao processar informações.
